MOPEDS.

A moped is a motorcycle that has the following features:

*Engine capacity of 50cc or less.

*Maximum design speed of no more than 50KPH (about 31MPH)

*If manufactured before 1 Sept. 1977. can be moved by it's pedals.

Minimum age for riding a moped is 16yrs.

It requires category P on your licence.

You must undertake a CBT course and get a DL196 certificate to make your licence valid before riding unaccompanied with 'L' plates.

A CBT certificate obtained on a moped is also valid for a motorcycle once the rider has reached the age of 17yrs and has the necessary licence.

If you have a full car licence obtained before 1 February, 2001. You are automaticaaly entitled to ride a moped without 'L' plates.

If you obtained your full car licence after 1 February, 2001 you must first complete a CBT course and obtain a DL196 certificate to validate your entitlement. This DL196 is not subject to the usual two year expiry period and should be kept carefully.

MOTORCYCLES.

Minimum age for riding a motorcycle is 17yrs.

It requires category A on your provisional licence.

You must undertake a CBT course and obtain a DL196 certificate to validate your provisional licence before riding on the road . You will be restricted to a machine of up to 11kw (14.6 bhp)

125cc. and must have 'L'plates attached front and rear.

If you pass your test on a motorcycle of between 75cc and 125cc you will obtain a category A1 light motorcycle licence. This will allow you to ride a motorcycle of up to 125cc witout 'L' plates.

If you pass your test on a machine of more than 120cc but not more than 125cc you will obtain a category A licence. You will be restricted to a machine up to 33 bhp for a period of two years, after which you can ride a motorcycle of any size.

If you are over 21 yrs and pass your test on a motorcycle of 46.6 bhp or above you can ride a machine of any size straight away.

You can only practice on the larger bike when accompanied by a qualified Direct Access instructor.
